The Router connects your local area network (LAN), or the group of PCs in your home or office, to the Internet. The Router processes and regulates the data that travels between these two networks. If necessary, configure your PCs to obtain an IP address automatically from the Router. (By default, Windows 98, 2000, Millennium, and XP computers are set to obtain an IP address automatically, so unless you have changed the default setting, then you will not need to configure your PCs.) Before you begin, make sure that all of your hardware is powered off, including the Router, PCs, hubs, switches, and cable or DSL modem. 2. Each PC must be set to obtain an IP address (or TCP/IP) address automatically (called DHCP). Computers use IP addresses to communicate with each other across a network or the Internet.
