No. 23-557). You can also use rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries (Cat. No. 23- 125). If you use rechargeable batteries, you also need a battery charger (Cat. No. 23-133). Cautions: • Never leave dead or weak batteries in the SCP-85. • If you do not plan to use the SCP-85 for a month or more, remove the batteries. • Dispose of batteries properly; do not bury or burn them. Replace the plug when you remove the headphones or speakers from the SCP-85. Listening Safely To protect your hearing, follow these guidelines when you use headphones. • Set the volume to the lowest setting before you begin listening. Then you can quickly tune to a stored station +5 by pressing a memory button (or and a memory but- ton). Follow these steps to store stations in memory. RADIO ON/OFF 1. Press to turn on the radio. See “Using Head- phones or Speakers” on Page 6. 1. Push open the cassette compartment’s cover, then push open the cassette compartment’s door. 2. Take up any slack in the cassette tape by turning its hub with your finger or a pencil. If you do not remove excess slack, the tape might become tangled in the play mec

Insert the cassette tape into the cassette compart- ment with the desired side facing you, the full reel to the right, and the open end facing up. 4. Close the cassette compartment’s door and cover. 5. Press PLAY to play the tape. Notes: • After playing to the end of each side, the tape automatically changes direction to play the other side. • To manually change the tape’s direction to play the other side, switch DIR to the other position. 16

This can greatly reduce the performance of the SCP-85. Use the following cleaning procedure after ev- ery 20 hours of operation. 1. Open the cassette compartment cover and door. 2. RESTORING TAPE TENSION AND SOUND QUALITY After you play a cassette several times, the tape might become tightly wound on the reels. This can cause play- back sound quality to deteriorate. To restore the sound quality, fast-forward the tape from the beginning to the end of one side, then completely re- wind it. Then loosen the tape reels by gently tapping each si
