Remove the battery cover on the back of the BackTrack after sliding the switch to the “unlock” position,and insert two AAA batteries (alkaline or lithium)*. North Arrow Compass Degrees Compass Mode 3. The BackT rack starts out in Compass Mode the first time you turn it on. An arrow points North, and the display shows the direction you’re facing in degrees (e.g. East=90 degrees). The directional arrow works best in both Compass and Location Modes with the unit held horizontally or “flat” in front of you. Other Operations Changing the Distance Units • T o change the units from English to Metric, HOLD both the MArK and MODE/POwEr buttons when any of the three location icons is selected- the distance units display changes from “yd” to “m”.
