PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS RISK OF EXPLOSIVE GASES. 2.1 NEVER smoke or allow a spark or fl ame in the vicinity of a battery or engine. 2.2 Remove personal metal items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces and watches when working with a lead-acid battery. For optimum solar battery maintainer output, face the front (black) side of the solar panel towards the sun, making sure there are no shadows being cast on the panel by the vehicle or other objects.
