OPERATION ROUTING BY FREEHAND See Figure 16. When used freehand, your plunge router becomes a flexible and versatile tool. This flexibility makes it possible to easily rout signs, relief sculptures, etc. There are two basic techniques for freehand routing: ■ Routing letters, grooves, and patterns into wood. ■ Routing out the background, leaving the letters or pattern raised above the surface. OPERATION PILOT BIT EDGING ROUTER See Figure 17. Rabbets and molded edges can be cut using piloted cutters. The pilot extends below the cutter. Some pilots are solid extensions of the cutter. Others are ball bearing guides that are fastened to the end of the cutter. The pilots allow the cutters to turn while the pilot follows the PILOT edge of the workpiece. It is the rate at which the bit is being advanced firmly and surely to produce a continuous spiral of uniform chips.
