The following figure shows the typical workstation system board block diagram. Figure 1-1 System board block diagram NOTE: The x1, x4, x8, and x16 designators describe the number of electrical PCIe lanes routed to an expansion slot. For example, x16(8) means that the expansion slot is mechanically a x16 length connector, with eight PCIe lanes connected. Expansion card slots The workstation implements one Intel X58 I/O chip to provide a total of six high-performance graphics and I/O slots. In addition to the two full x16 PCIe Gen2 slots, two additional PCIe x8 (4) slots (x8 mechanically, x4 electrically) provide extra I/O bandwidth for high speed I/O cards.
